How would you describe the philosophy and overall concept behind LUX?

Our philosophy is to create a lighter and brighter environment for our guests when they come to the Maldives to celebrate their lives. We are in the people business and in the time business: we take care of our guests' free time and do our utmost to ensure they have the best possible time while they are here.

You became the general manager here in September 2017, following a global career in the hospitality industry. What have you learnt along the way that's most relevant to running a successful hotel?

I think the key to success has to do with your team. Nobody can do this alone, you need a good team with a family spirit. And you also need to love people, because we are in the people industry: we invest a lot of time in creating happy moments for our guests. And of course you need good leadership; you cannot expect of your people what you cannot do yourself. I have always believed this to be true. Above everything else, however, you have to love what you do.

What is LUX's socioeconomic contribution to the community?

We probably employ one of the largest numbers of local workers: we currently have over 600 employees on these islands, which includes 32 nationalities, but the largest contingent is from the Maldives, representing a good contribution to the country's economy.

Is the resort equipped for Halal tourism?

Yes. Because many of my colleagues are local, and this is a Muslim country, they are familiar with GCC customs. We also have one of the biggest kids' clubs in the Maldives, which is a factor to take into account because GCC culture is family-oriented. We have many children-friendly spots where it is safe for them to go in the water while their parents can watch them. And, of course, we have a mosque on the island that is available to our guests.
